Police rebellion In Ecuador

There has been confusion in the media and the left concerning the recent events in Ecuador; whether it was a coup or a police strike.

But even if we don’t agree with some of the characterizations narrated by “The Economist” (October 9-15 issue), liberal in some social issues and completely conservative in economic matters, it describes the reality of the coup/strike controversy:

“A police rebellion in Ecuador was described by the president, Rafael Correa, as an attempt coup. Mr. Correa was attacked with tear gas and dropped in a hospital for 12 hours by police who were protesting against civil-service reforms that could cut their benefits. The siege was eventually broken up by the army. A state of emergency was briefly imposed.”
